Preview: Warsaw Eagles vs Warsaw Mets

After a week off from league action, we are back – and Week 3 of the Polish Football League brings a derby! This Saturday we take on Warsaw Mets. The red-and-yellows have made a good start to the season and are scoring plenty of points, so a demanding contest lies ahead. Kickoff is at 16:00.

At stake on Saturday is, first, the title of best team in Warsaw for the 2024 season and, second, a move up the table and a firmer foothold in the play-off places. Right now we and the Mets both have a 1-1 record and 2 points in the table. We are one place higher because we have conceded fewer points. Saturday's head-to-head will also decide (should we finish the regular season level on league points) which team finishes higher – and that could determine who reaches the semi-finals.

We have played the Warsaw Mets in four derbies and have yet to win one. Across the whole history of the Warsaw Derby in the top flight, however, we have won no fewer than six times over the years, with opponents including Warsaw Spartans and Warsaw Sharks, among others.

In 2024 the red-and-yellows' biggest strength is without doubt their offence. The Mets have already scored 67 points in total, the second-best tally in the league. The key piece of that unit is surely quarterback DeAndre Clayton, who finds his receivers superbly through the air but can also tuck the ball and move the chains himself when the situation demands. Players such as Krzysztof Andrukonis, Maksym Korol, Tomasz Kempka and Krzysztof Bartwicki are the Mets' driving force and can rack up points in no time. Things are a little worse in defence. The "Miastowi" have already conceded 65 points, the second-worst record in the league. Only the Jaguars and the Lowlanders – the two teams at the bottom of the table – have fared worse in that respect.
