A May bank holiday test. Match preview: AZS UWM Olsztyn Lakers – Warsaw Eagles

After the excitement of the Eagles' outing in the European CEFL, it's time to return to domestic action. The start of the long May bank holiday weekend takes us to Olsztyn, where we face the local Lakers. Kickoff this Thursday at 13:00.

If you don't have plans for the May bank holiday yet, we have a great suggestion. On 1 May at 13:00, at the UWM Stadium in Olsztyn, we play our fourth game of this year's Polish Football League season. Our opponents are the well-known, solid "Lakesiders" – AZS UWM Olsztyn Lakers. We have yet to taste defeat in 2025 and, as the only team in the league, we have not conceded A SINGLE point. We will do everything to keep that form going, although, knowing the Lakers, they will make life tough and won't give up a single play.

The team from the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship has spent several seasons moving between PFL1 and PFL2. The orange-and-navy side's greatest achievement in recent years was undoubtedly winning the PFL2 title in 2022. That day, in the pouring rain, the "Lakesiders" crushed Jaguars Kąty Wrocławskie 58:0. The Lakers also spent last season in PFL2. They finished the regular season with a 5-1 record before losing their semi-final 0:3 away to Tychy Falcons.

Since the eleven-a-side leagues were merged and the competition reformed, the Lakers have played two games so far. At home they beat Białe Lwy Gdańsk 47:0, and away in Ząbki they lost 13:48 to Warsaw Mets. The Lakers' roster includes well-known league names such as Artur Paź, Adam Ossowski and Patryk Grabowski. Patryk Piechowski and Jakub Wąsikowski have also been among the scorers. This will be only the Olsztyn side's third game of the season. The Lakers have had plenty of time to study our game and to take advantage of the fact that we play just five days after a tough game in Sweden.

The following players will miss Thursday's game for the Eagles: Kevin Sherman, Dawid Magrean, Mateusz Szczęk, Tomasz Sętkiewicz, Przemysław Odzimek, Bartosz Bednarczyk, Wojciech Przysowa and Kornel Witkowski. That makes it a great opportunity for the second-string players at those positions to show what they can do and fight for more time in the starting line-up. The season is long, there are plenty of games ahead, and we need to know for sure that every player can perform at the highest level. The chance to prove it comes this Thursday.
